OLIAROS | 2009

This 18-unit student house project, an infill on Marathonos Street in Athens, brings a new sense of individual and adaptable space – largely accomplished through the building’s hardworking façade. Each element has climatic, functional and programmatic use.

Sliding glass doors are set back from the brick frontage by 400-500mm, giving each unit a Juliette balcony and space for a small kitchen garden. This sheltered, ventilated area can also be used as additional clothes drying or storage space. These balconies also help to modulate light, and provide layers of texture and detail. In warmer months, the sliding doors can be opened for ventilation, with shading provided by the brick panels.

These features aim to give all residents and tenants a sense of ownership of the building as well as stimulating creative, individualised occupation.
