Transport for London | 2015 – Commissioned by TfL, the Barking Riverside station will be constructed at the end of a 2km long viaduct. The design extends the building’s façade along the rail tracks, selectively exposing the structure of the viaduct within and thus helping to blur the visual distinction between the architecture of the station and the civil engineering of the viaduct. This integration of viaduct and terminal building brings a human scale to what will otherwise be a very dominant piece of transport infrastructure. In addition to the Overground terminus the design includes a secure bike storage facility and space for two shops facing onto new public space, being designed by Landscape Architects Burns & Nice. The station will serve Barking Riverside, which is the largest housing development site in east London.
