Commitment
This Climate Change Plan / Carbon Reduction Plan sets clear targets for reducing emissions, aiming for Net Zero Scope 1 and 2 by 2030 and Net Zero Scope 3 by 2050, in line with the mandates of the Climate Change Act. It outlines key timeframes and planned actions to achieve these goals.
Moxon Architects Ltd
Our work combines design excellence, technical talent and a commitment to faultless delivery. Founded in 2004, Moxon has since attracted major clients in a variety of sectors, from national rail providers to leading cultural institutions. Among them: Transport for London, Hauser & Wirth, Argent Kings Cross, Lend Lease and HS2 Ltd.
The common threads are bold vision and versatility. We approach each project with fresh eyes, first understanding the needs and ambitions of our client, and then striving to elevate them. The result is distinctly individual work, clear in its purpose and appropriate to its context.
Moxon were named Architecture Practice of the Year at the Scottish Design Awards in 2019 and 2021, and UK wide Infrastructure Practice of the Year in 2019 and 2021. The practice won the RIAS Andrew Doolan Award for the Best Building in Scotland in 2022.
Today, the practice is split across its two offices in West London and Highland Aberdeenshire.
Emissions
Moxon Architects is in the process of calculating and publishing its first-year emissions report in 2025. Historic emissions will be estimated based on the year preceding the introduction of the strategies outlined below, enabling progress tracking and forecasting the impact of future changes towards our Net Zero goals.
The carbon footprint outlined in this plan follows the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard. We have established our Operational Boundaries, which define the Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 categories within our sphere of influence.
Moxon Architects is committed to implementing the following measures to achieve a year-on-year reduction in carbon emissions.
Scope 1
Direct emissions arising from owned or controlled sources e.g. owned vehicles or combustion of fuel in facilities.
- Moxon does not own any vehicles or fossil fuel apparatus in either office
Scope 2
Indirect emissions from purchased energy e.g. electricity, heating and cooling.
Moxon Architects has identified key measures to achieve year-on-year carbon emission reductions across its offices in Scotland and London:
- Electricity Supply: Both offices are powered exclusively by electricity. A renewable green tariff will be assessed and implemented upon contract renewal.
- Electricity Emissions Calculation: GHG emissions from electricity will be calculated as kWh × CO2e, using the UK Government GHG Conversion Factors for Company Reporting (2019).
- Scottish Office Heating: The office uses underfloor heating powered by a ground source heat pump, delivering five units of heat per unit of energy consumed (SOP), making 50% of total energy used on-site derived from Net Zero technologies.
- Additional Net Zero Technologies: The feasibility of photovoltaic panels and battery storage will be explored to reduce reliance on grid-supplied power.
- London Office Heating: The London office, leased by Moxon, relies on an electric HVAC system. Efforts will be made to engage with the landlord on adopting renewable heating systems, such as Air Source Heat Pumps, and improving insulation during future renovations.
- Green Leases: For rented spaces, negotiate "green clauses" with landlords to ensure sustainable building management practices.
- Energy Management Systems: Implement available technical solutions, including hardware and software-based Building and Energy Management Systems, such as smart thermostats.
- Power Management Policies: Enforce power management practices for IT equipment, including laptops, PCs, and printers. Investigate smart IT systems that remotely manage the IT infrastructure.
- Virtual Servers & Cloud Computing: Shift data storage to energy-efficient cloud services, reducing the need for on-site servers.
- Behavioural Change: Promote awareness and accountability by publishing an internal dashboard displaying carbon output and energy consumption by office location.
Scope 3
Indirect emissions from the organisations value chain e.g. purchased goods and services, waste, business travel, staff commuting, water.
Moxon Architects has outlined additional measures to support year-on-year carbon emission reductions across its Upstream and Downstream sources and enhance sustainable practices
- ISO 14001 Certification: Obtain ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification to reduce operational waste, optimise energy use, and increase recycling and reuse of office supplies.
- Hybrid Working & Meetings: Continue to support hybrid working and promote virtual meetings to reduce commuting and business travel.
- Sustainable Commuting & Travel: Encourage public transport use, particularly trains, for London-based employees.
- Travel Analysis & Reduction: Investigate travel patterns to identify frequent travellers and journeys, exploring options to reduce overall travel.
- Carbon Budget Concept: Assess the feasibility of introducing a personal 'Carbon Pot' or 'Carbon Budget' for business travel, capping individual emissions.
- Green Accommodation Preference: Prioritise accommodation with the highest green rating, using Click Travel data.
- Sustainable Travel Incentives: Investigate offering salary sacrifice or discount schemes for sustainable travel options like e-bikes.
- EV Infrastructure & Support: Review car charger provision and explore salary sacrifice schemes to encourage EV ownership.
- Sustainability Champions: Appoint Sustainability Champions at each location to share information on reducing environmental impacts, carbon reduction, and key environmental events.
- Role-Specific Sustainability Actions: Conduct role-by-role analysis to assign personalised sustainability actions as part of the Annual Review process.
- Sustainability Skills Training: Provide training sessions on sustainable design practices and personal carbon footprint reduction.
- Gamification of Sustainability: Run office challenges to reduce carbon footprints, like 'No Print Weeks' or 'Cycle to Work' months.
Declaration
Carbon Reduction Plan Compliance and Reporting
This Carbon Reduction Plan is developed in accordance with PPN 06/21. Emissions will be recorded in line with the GHG Reporting Protocol Corporate Standard and the appropriate Government emission conversion factors for greenhouse gas company reporting.
- Scope 1 and Scope 2 Emissions will be reported in accordance with Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) requirements.
- Scope 3 Emissions will be reported in alignment with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard, focusing on the required subset of Scope 3 categories relevant to Moxon Architects.
This Carbon Reduction Plan has been reviewed and signed off by the Board of Directors.
