Commitment to achieving Net Zero

Moxon Architects Limited is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Moxon Architects’ emissions reporting began in the 2024-25 reporting year. We have reported against the five mandatory categories of Scope 3 mandated under the PPN 006 standard, along with Scope 1 and 2 emissions, based on operational control. We have also voluntarily reported emissions from Fuel and Energy Related Activities.

Scope 2 emissions in our baseline year were generated entirely by electricity consumption at our Aberdeenshire and London offices. Neither property uses fossil fuel heating and we do not have company vehicles, so we had no Scope 1 emissions. Upstream Transport was estimated to be immaterial to overall emissions (<1%) and Downstream Transport is not applicable to our organisation as a service business.  

To better reflect our real-world environmental impact, our Staff Commuting figures include homeworking and hotel stays, all air travel includes radiative forcing and we have used life cycle emission factors for Scope 3 activities wherever possible.

A small portion of emissions in our baseline year were calculated using estimates or industry benchmarks where complete data were unavailable. We are committed to continuous improvement in our emissions data, and recalculation of our base year will be implemented in future reporting periods if necessary to maintain an effective base year comparison.

Emissions reduction targets

Moxon Architects has committed to a long-term target of achieving net zero by 2050 at the latest. 

In practice, this equates to a 90% absolute reduction in Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 2050 from our 2024-25 baseline. The remaining 10% of emissions will be balanced by emissions removals to achieve net zero.

To ensure we make tangible, science-based and continuous progress towards our long-term target, we have also adopted the following carbon reduction target:

42% absolute reduction in Scope 1+2 emissions by 2030 from our 2024-25 base.

Our annual emissions reduction targets are set out in the chart below. Our targets commit us to a decrease in total annual Scope 2 emissions by 2030 to 8.06 tCO2e.

Carbon reduction projects

We are committed to taking action to bring down our emissions in-line with our targets. A materiality analysis of our 2024-25 emissions shows that our impact was overwhelmingly caused by Business Travel and Staff Commuting, as shown by the chart below:

Current & completed carbon reduction initiatives

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since our baseline and will be in effect when performing contracts.

Quarry Studios
Our Aberdeenshire HQ, Quarry Studios, was designed with energy efficiency and low impact in mind. The building envelope is highly insulated and all space and water heating is provided by a ground source heat pump. Our heat pump delivers five units of heat per unit of energy consumed (SOP) and results in 50% of total energy used on-site being derived from low carbon technology.

Active and sustainable travel
We encourage active travel and public transport use amongst our team. In 2024-25, 40% of employees walked or cycled to work – collectively travelling 11,199 zero carbon miles. A further 13% used public transport, collectively travelling 3,923 miles, and one driver travelled 12,705 miles using a battery EV. 

In total, 45% of all commuter travel was completed through low or zero carbon means. The single EV alone avoided 3.12 tCO2e compared to an average petrol car. We also encourage travelling by train for business trips where possible. As a result, 75% of land-based business travel by staff in 2024-25 was completed by train.

Environment Management System
We operate an Environmental Management System (EMS) accredited to ISO 14001 to ensure continual improvement is embedded across our operations. Ongoing management of this standard ensures we will continually identify opportunities to reduce operational waste and optimise efficiencies across the business.

Future Carbon Reduction Initiatives

In the future we hope to implement further measures such as:

Renewable electricity and energy management
We will investigate the feasibility of switching to a 100% renewable electricity tariff for Quarry Studios when our contract is up for renewal. This will result in net zero carbon operations by reducing Scope 2 emissions for this office to zero (market-based method). 

However, we are aware that reducing grid electricity usage must be a priority, so we are exploring the feasibility of solar PV, battery storage, energy management systems and energy efficient equipment on-site. In London, we plan to engage with our landlord to understand their plans for improving energy efficiency in future renovations and use of renewable power.

Air travel
Although air travel is sometimes required, we are aware of its environmental impact. Flights generated more than a quarter of all measured emissions in 2024-25. Going forward we will ensure air travel, especially within the UK, is the last resort mode of travel and virtual meetings are prioritised whenever possible. As part of this commitment, we are considering the possibility of introducing a ‘carbon budget’ for business travel to cap individual or team-based emissions.

Electric vehicles
For employees who have to drive to and from work, we are investigating our options for introducing an EV Salary Sacrifice scheme to support the switch to electric cars. This has the potential to avoid more than 8 tCO2e in annual emissions, based on 2024-25 business travel and commuter mileage.

Employee engagement
We plan to promote awareness and accountability within our team by publishing an internal dashboard that displays our carbon emissions and energy consumption by location. We will also appoint sustainability champions at least location to lead efforts and run office challenges to improve sustainability, and include personalised sustainability actions as part of employees’ annual review process. Sustainability training will be provided to support this work.

Data and systems
We will continue to measure our emissions annually and put practices in place to continually improve data quality. Longer-term, we will seek to expand our measurement of Scope 3 categories to better understand our wider carbon footprint.

Declaration and sign off

This Carbon Reduction Plan has been completed in accordance with PPN 006 and associated guidance and reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans. Emissions have been reported and recorded in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the GHG Reporting Protocol corporate standard [1] and uses the appropriate Government emission conversion factors for greenhouse gas company reporting [2].

Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions have been reported in accordance with SECR requirements, and the required subset of Scope 3 emissions have been reported in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard [3].

This Carbon Reduction Plan has been reviewed and signed off by the board of directors (or equivalent management body).
