The Taiwan Tower will commemorate the centennial anniversary of the founding of Taiwan, R.O.C. Given the symbolic requirements of such a structure this shortlisted proposal is an attempt to synthesise an elemental understanding of the Taiwanese condition that can be considered and appreciated a priori without recourse to historic or literal metaphor.
The substantial mass of the programmed facilities are held approximately 320m above Taichung Park. These volumes are contained and supported at the top of a complex elongated web of steelwork that extends to a maximum height of 360m above grade. This lattice structure is non-uniform and non-heirarchical; it is appreciated as a singular visually lightweight mass from a distance and as a collaborative network of many individual members up close. From the vantage point of the Observatory at the top of the structure the Taiwan Straits will be visible over the summit of the Dadu Mountain.
