Lui Cottage
Vernacular understood through a blend of conservation, restoration and new-build
Lui Cottage
This small residential project is conceptualised as a set of parts, made cohesive through material palette and a shared interpretation of the distinctive Braemar vernacular. These parts: a retained Category C Listed granite cottage; reconstructed ancillary timber 'wee house'; two new extensions; are further integrated within the site through the reorganization of access and improved garden spaces.
The larger extension is conceived the contemporary counterpart of the wee house: referencing its shape, scale and materiality. Selective openings in the walls are combined with a large 'lantern' ridge rooflight and exposed timber frame to lend airiness to the diminutive new volume.
