Durslade Farm Shop

A contemporary take on agricultural architecture

Durslade Farm Shop

Somerset, England

2019 — 2020

Clients   Hauser & Wirth, Artfarm
Durslade is a community farm shop on the site of contemporary art centre, Hauser & Wirth Somerset, designed to bring together architecture, education and conservation.
A lit, modern barn-style building with large glass windows is surrounded by a wet, reflective surface at dusk. The left side shows an adjoining structure, while the sky is a dim, overcast blue.

Extending an existing complex of converted agricultural buildings, the shop draws its cues from surrounding vernacular forms. The structure is clad in rough-sawn timber and features a gable roof of reclaimed tiles. Both are designed to weather over time, embedding the building into its rich historic context. Inside, the open and pared back design features exposed stonework from the existing adjacent building and an expressed roof structure formed of meticulously detailed steel portals and timber.

‘Showcases Moxon’s technical talent and their commitment to exceptional design and sustainability.’

‘Drawing cues from the surrounding vernacular forms, the large extension is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional agricultural building.’

Somserset Living

A rural scene with a paved path leading to several farm buildings under a clear blue sky. The ground on either side of the path is grassy, and a few trees are visible in the background. The lighting suggests early morning or late afternoon.

The high-performance envelope, passive ventilation, natural daylighting and locally salvaged construction materials make the building a showcase in sustainability for Hauser & Wirth Somerset’s growing visitor base. Durslade sits within a growing portfolio of schemes designed by Moxon for Artfarm, and embodies our shared values around sustainability, local craftsmanship and material provenance.
