Landscape-led bridges for a sustainable district
Lilleakerbyen Bridges
‘The bridges designed by Moxon and COWI stand out for their thoughtful integration into the landscape and their harmonious relationship both with each other and with the historical surroundings. Demonstrating a deep respect for the delicate river environment, these bridges showcase elegant design and meticulous detailing, creating a framework for new nature experiences along the river.’
Olav Line, CEO of Mustad Eiendom
Using locally sourced materials appropriate to the delicate river environment, the crossings will connect the district’s key cultural hubs for pedestrians, vehicles, and cyclists. While each bridge represents a distinct design response to its natural setting, along the Lysaker river, shared articulation and detailing across all three crossings lends a subtle design kinship.
The Timber Bridge
The northernmost crossing will be a timber pedestrian bridge, elevated above the riverbank within the surrounding tree canopy. The use of timber as the primary spanning material will minimise foundation requirements, with the lightweight exposed edge beams following a gently arched profile, encouraging users to pause and take in the surroundings.
The Granite Bridge
Further south, a robust vehicle and pedestrian bridge will be nestled low in the river valley. Designed to read as an extension of the natural landscape in materiality and form, the bridge will be assembled from shallow arching beams made of regionally sourced stone segments strung together with steel tendons.
The Steel Bridge
Finally, a dynamic S-shaped steel bridge will overcome different heights in the riverbanks, providing cyclists and pedestrians with an accessible crossing, that enjoys shifting perspectives of the river.
The Lilleakerbyen Bridges are designed with our longstanding design partners COWI, with collaborations including ongoing work for HS2, Hampton Bridge and Dukes Meadows Footbridge.
