The Art Fund Pavilion is formally simple, with spatial interest created by the detailing of the timber envelope and the interaction between the structural system and façade treatment. From the outside, the pavilion appears as a unified solid form; on stepping inside, a series of cracks and slot openings are revealed within the timber structure – fragmented apertures which break up the perception of the site beyond.
At night, the visual effect is reversed; the cracks between the timber elements become clearly visible from the exterior as slits of light, as the pavilion is lit from inside. The angled timber beams are a clear expression of construction method; the structure is formed from a series of stacked portal frames, with plywood elements for the wall panelling and roof covering. The tilted layers of timber emphasise the relationship of the pavilion to the site, the structure appearing to rise from the ground plane.
