A human-scale transport terminus
Barking Riverside
The design, in collaboration with Atkins and Burns & Nice, blends the architecture of the station with the civil engineering behind the 2km-long connecting viaduct, creating a carefully integrated transport terminus.
The station’s operational facilities sit within the footprint of the viaduct, with the ticket office at ground level and platforms above contained within a single façade. The design extends the façade along the rail tracks, selectively exposing the structure of the viaduct, with a series of crafted stainless-steel panels, transitioning from solid to perforated. Together, these provide a protective, semi-transparent envelope, accentuating the acceleration and deceleration of trains arriving and departing to and from the stations.
Sitting at the heart of a new public square, a generous entrance at ground level invites passengers into the terminus, while a central concourse guides customers through the station and up to platform level. The station is also home to ample secure bike storage and two shops facing onto the new public space.
Playing an intrinsic role in the wider riverfront development, the station provides an important community hub, transforming journeys for new residents of this fast-emerging neighbourhood.
