Castle Cary Station
2025
The proposed scheme introduces a new footbridge at the southern end of the platforms, incorporating lifts and stairs to provide both step-free and conventional access. This arrangement offers convenience for all passengers, with generous stair widths and landings that can also accommodate queuing during busy events such as festival weekends. The design remains compact and sympathetic to the station’s rural character, using modest, durable materials consistent with existing structures while presenting a contemporary appearance. The lifts are positioned discreetly to the rear, ensuring minimal visual impact.
The design responds to a range of operational and technical constraints set by Network Rail, including maintaining clearances for signals, ensuring sufficient space for future electrification, and complying with DfT accessibility standards. It avoids timber and excessive glazing, minimises impact on parking, and provides safe, well-protected access routes. Overall, the proposal delivers a permanent, inclusive, and efficient connection between all platforms, balancing functionality, safety, and visual harmony to enhance accessibility and passenger experience at Castle Cary Station
