Leeds Bridge
Leeds,
England
2018
This bridge over the River Aire in Leeds provides a memorable urban realm to connect users with the river corridor and wider city. The curved alignment creates a dynamic experience for bridge users as their views from the bridge constantly change.
Designed for Leeds City Council, the new pedestrian footbridge is a vital element in the North-South connectivity of a center that is rapidly expanding southwards and has the potential to almost double in size through the regeneration and development of the South Bank.
A central girder is shaped to handle any torsion caused by uneven loading and also forms a barrier between cyclists and pedestrians while doubling as a bench at midspan. By placing the structure in the middle of the deck the open edges will capitalise on views up and down the river while giving the bridge a deceptively slender appearance when viewed from the river banks and afar.
