A showcase for engineering innovation
Edgcote Viaduct
‘An exemplar, demonstrating how design quality can add value’
HS2 design panel
Drawing on the cutting-edge engineering solutions pioneered in Thame Valley Viaduct, Edgcote is designed as a series of distinct prefabricated, interlocking elements. This will facilitate a tightly coordinated assembly, reducing embodied carbon and minimising disruption on site.
Supported by a series of pre-cast slender concrete piers, with projections sculpted to conceal the bearings, the long elevation will carry a clean and elegant aesthetic. Embedded within surrounding woodland, the subtle curved trajectory is designed to be glimpsed both in discrete snapshots through the treetops, and as a series of piers running into the distance.
The parapets will carry a finely detailed, textured finish, creating abstract patterns of shadow and light. This will add depth to the structural elements and soften their appearance against the pastoral landscape.
To conserve the area’s local ecology, a wider holistic proposal is in place to extend the native riparian woodland around the viaduct, enhancing the natural characteristics of the floodplain.
Edgcote is one of a series of viaducts designed with EKFB and ASC for HS2. Each respond to the intricacies of the individual site and to HS2’s overarching ambition to drive environmental and design excellence.
