Edgcote Viaduct

A showcase for engineering innovation

Edgcote Viaduct

Set low into the rural landscape Edgcote Viaduct will carry high speed trains across the floodplain of the River Cherwell for HS2.
A construction site featuring large yellow and red cranes lifting heavy materials. Workers in orange safety gear are on-site, surrounded by barriers, machinery, and vehicles. Trees and a cloudy blue sky form the backdrop.

‘An exemplar, demonstrating how design quality can add value’

HS2 design panel

Drawing on the cutting-edge engineering solutions pioneered in Thame Valley Viaduct, Edgcote is designed as a series of distinct prefabricated, interlocking elements. This will facilitate a tightly coordinated assembly, reducing embodied carbon and minimising disruption on site.

A serene river curves through lush green grass and trees under a cloudy sky. A modern bridge stands to the left with lampposts lining its path, reflected in the calm water. The scene is peaceful and natural.
A serene scene under a bridge with a small, reflective stream surrounded by tall green grass. Leafy trees line the background on a gentle slope, creating a peaceful, natural setting.

Supported by a series of pre-cast slender concrete piers, with projections sculpted to conceal the bearings, the long elevation will carry a clean and elegant aesthetic. Embedded within surrounding woodland, the subtle curved trajectory is designed to be glimpsed both in discrete snapshots through the treetops, and as a series of piers running into the distance.

The parapets will carry a finely detailed, textured finish, creating abstract patterns of shadow and light. This will add depth to the structural elements and soften their appearance against the pastoral landscape.

A modern white building partially hidden among dense, leafless trees and greenery, with a grassy field in the foreground under a blue sky.

To conserve the area’s local ecology, a wider holistic proposal is in place to extend the native riparian woodland around the viaduct, enhancing the natural characteristics of the floodplain.

Edgcote is one of a series of viaducts designed with EKFB and ASC for HS2. Each respond to the intricacies of the individual site and to HS2’s overarching ambition to drive environmental and design excellence.
