A new crossing to complement a historic structure
Gairnshiel Jubilee Bridge
‘A remarkable example of contemporary bridge design, skilfully balancing technical, environmental, and community needs’
Civic Trust Awards Jury
The single clear span bridge has a sculptural yet robust form that responds to the natural formation of the glen, while complementing the original Category A-listed bridge which runs parallel. The new structure ensures the preservation of the historic crossing which remains open for foot, cycle and equestrian use.
Gairnshiel Jubilee Bridge is designed in response to both river flood levels and the low alignment of the highway. The parapets and embankments are constructed from locally sourced, repurposed granite blocks. The below deck structure tapers in cross section, receding into shadow to achieve a deceptively slender appearance overall. Formed from weathering steel, these girders will take on a muted russet tone over time, helping the bridge blend further into the surrounding Cairngorms National Park.
Designed in collaboration with the client, Aberdeenshire Council Highways Department and structural engineers Arcadis, Gairnshiel Jubilee Bridge represents extensive consultation with historic bodies and the local community. It was opened to the public in 2023 by His Majesty The King
