Bering Straits Bridge
2009
Five buildings - two resorts, two research centres, and a conference centre - hang from the bridge, touching the land only at either end. The central conference centre hovers directly over the Date Line, offering a de-territorialised space for international dialogue. The Diomede Islands remain largely untouched, with only essential infrastructure such as plant rooms and cable-car docks, on the ground.
A year-round promenade with footpaths and cable cars connects buildings along the bridge. Below, a high-speed tunnel links Russia and the U.S. for transport, with a central emergency tunnel and a station on Big Diomede. Layered for the Arctic climate, inhabitable areas trap warmth with a snow shell in winter and vents in summer to maintain comfort.
