This concept proposal reconciles a densely programmed city block with the desire for adaptable, and meaningfully sustainable, urban space. The building form is anchored by functionally concentrated towers, providing for a flexible arrangement of stacked timber apartments.
The towers provide all circulation, air cooling and water and waste management in concentrated nodes, allowing for a flexible arrangement of accommodation that lends itself to future adaptation and modification. The result is a robust and coherent architectural approach that is nevertheless highly flexible and adaptable - an organic assembly that meets the requirement for super high density.
The modular apartments are formed from 8m x 3m timber boxes. Each box is considered as permanent formwork - structural concrete is cast into the interstitial spaces between units providing thermal mass, acoustic separation and structural integrity.
