This sketch proposal for Littlehampton is a compact, self-contained pavilion designed for flexible use as a public information kiosk, café, ice cream parlour, or small gallery. Formally it appears to rise from the sea wall, following the beach steps and aligning with the seafront. A projecting canopy offers rain shelter, while the angled inland face protects against wind.
Each elevation serves a unique purpose - providing seating, outdoor space, or sea views - and the pavilion’s appearance shifts dramatically depending on the viewpoint, evoking a boat prow, slipway, diving board, or harbour shed.
Material choices continue the landscape scheme, integrating the pavilion into its surroundings. Hard surfacing could extend to form the walls and roof, while timber from decking and seating would also be used on the sloped roof. This restrained material approach allows the pavilion to complement rather than compete with nearby landmarks like the lighthouse.
