The City of Stockholm
The proposal is for a new public square for the City of Stockholm. Held above this new plaza are a series of libraries housed in self contained vessels that connect the users of the library with the park. The vessels can operate as part of a whole with the Asplund building or singularly as specialist libraries. Each library relates to the original Asplund plan and the urban streetscape, whilst providing a collegiate setting facing the landscape away from the street edge.
The plaza is conceived as a 24 hour facility, running through the entire scheme providing an urban condition under and around the new and existing library. The plaza is a focal point on the route from the new station to park beyond and contains a concentration of program elements accessible separately from the library as diverse as auditoriums, cafes, restaurants and markets. Public space below the library can be entered from any point along the Odengaten elevation or from the Library park.
