Private Client | Chelsea, London, UK 2010 - 2012

This project entailed the refurbishment and extension of a Grade 2 Listed townhouse in Chelsea. The space has been reconfigured throughout, to provide a fewer number of larger rooms, with additions to the top and bottom of the house increasing its volume by approximately a quarter.

At the Lower Ground level, where the space opens to the rear garden, traces of the original structure have been deliberately retained as the geometric guidelines for a new otherwise largely open space – establishing a hierarchy of living space, kitchen, study, library and stairwell. The compact extension occupies the footprint of a previously existing add-on, however the volume has been maximized to create a new double height garden window that brings light deep into the middle of the plan at both lower and upper ground levels.

The lime finished English Oak staircase is part of a unified joinery element that combines high level library, pull out writing desk, secret compartments and mobile library steps.
