Modernist inspired highland hut
Culardoch Shieling
Measuring under 50m2, the design draws on both 20th century modernism and on traditional and modest rustic structures, ranging from Scottish crofts to Swiss Alpine shacks, balancing spectacular views with a sense of shelter.
Composed to curate views over Cairngorms National Park, each window frames a feature within the landscape, including the granite tors of Ben Avon. The hut interior is lined in Sitka spruce and features a communal timber dining table, rectangular shelving echoing the window composition, a suspended custom iron shelf with candles for low lighting, and a wood burning stove to give warmth.
Designed to merge into the vast, rugged terrain, the shieling’s simple cruck (curved timber) frame features deep overhanging eaves and a roof camouflaged in heather, moss and stone.
‘Delicious...a very well-considered piece of architecture.’
Eric Parry, Chairman of the Jury at the Scottish Design Awards
