A new piece of civic infrastructure
Silvertown Bridge
The elegant, step-free bridge will follow a double ‘S’-shape curve, delivering generous public realm for cyclists and pedestrians, along with seated zones to pause and take in views across the dock.
‘The stunning design of the new bridge will elevate it as a gateway to Silvertown’s exciting new piece of the city, and provide car-free access for all, establishing the Royal Docks as a pleasurable place to live, work and play.’
Ed Mayes, Project director for Silvertown – Lendlease
The bridge structure skims along the water on V piers to cradle the dynamic pathway, which will rise at a gentle, accessible incline to allow small boats to pass beneath. At its mid-point, the bridge opens via a double bascule mechanism, allowing large vessels full use of the dock. This unique configuration of ‘twisting’ elements is both novel and efficient, unveiling the deeper beauty of the alignment and overall bridge form.
This new piece of civic infrastructure will help to shape this new neighbourhood, creating an uplifting experience for over 3,000 people journeying to and from this new destination each day.
